1st Meal

Today Lily started eating solid food. Her dr. recommended having breakfast and lunch, so that's what we did. I made homemade brown jasmine rice cereal. I took me two tries to get it right. For the first batch I ground the rice in my Cuisinart food processor, and when I cooked it up it was way too chunky. I ended up eating that for breakfast the next day with sweetened condensed milk- yum! So the 2nd time I made it I ground the rice in my coffee grinder. It came out a perfect powder! When I cooked it up it seemed like a better consistency for Lily. To make it even easier to swallow I added about half an ounce of breastmilk to 1/4 cup of the rice cereal after it cooled.

Lily was very enthusiastic about the spoon. She grabbed for it and even opened her mouth when I brought it up to her (but then again, she would have done that with anything I put up to her mouth!). Once the food hit her tongue, she made quite a face and spit it out. We tried again. Same thing, but that's pretty much what I expected. She's still learning how to manage to bring the food to the back of her mouth and she still seems to have the tongue thrust reflex. These first couple meals are just practice for the real deal. I'm still so proud of her for trying!!

The meal ended after four soupy spoonfuls. She had the same thing for lunch, too. It wasn't much food, and most of it ended up on her chin and fingers, but man did it make a difference in her tummy. Our little stinky face had the stinkiest farts all night long! Which is strangely comforting because then I knew that at least some of the cereal got in!
